The Giant’s Castle Game Reserve is located in the central Drakensberg, part of the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, a world heritage site. Giant’s Castle Camp looks out over the Bushmans River and the mountainous sleeping giant profile in the distance. This 34,638 ha park was proclaimed in 1903 and is noted for preserving the Bearded vulture. There is a permanent hide, the Lammergeier Hide, that has been producing close-up viewing and photographs of not only the endangered Bearded vulture, but also other forms of wildlife, such as Black-backed jackals to the Verreauxs' Eagle, Jackal Buzzard and many more. Large herds of Eland do roam the grassland hills and are sometimes seen from the camp.

Giant’s Castle Game Reserve ranges from a lofty 3280 meters, down to the river at 1300 meters, and hosts a wide diversity of plant and animal life. The legacy of the early San people is left recorded in the numerous rock art frescos, with the Main Cave, which is located close to Giant’s Castle Camp, being the most prominent one. This is an easy walk on the contour path from the camp, and has numerous exhibits of ancient rock art paintings on the cave overhang, as well as a diorama depicting these vanished folk and how they would have lived in these protective shelters. There is a local guide at the cave to assist in the interpretation.

Accommodation at Giant’s Castle Camp

All the brick under thatch chalets are self-catering, with some having mountain views, whilst others look out onto the beautiful indigenous gardens. All the units have kitchens with microwave, oven and kettle, along with all basic requirements such as utensils, cutlery and crockery. The bathrooms have a bath and shower combo, most with twin bedded bedrooms with a lounging area, a deck with a braai stand. All bed linen and bath towels are supplied. Limited double bed units.

Giant’s Castle Camp Activities

Hiking on the numerous marked trails.
Trout fishing. In season only. Permit required.
Swimming in the clear rock pools.
Visit the San Main Caves Museum.
The Lammergeier Hide, now known as the ‘Vulture Hide Restaurant’ is particularly popular and needs be booked well in advance. Guests would require a 4X4 to access the hides. Hides accommodate a maximum of 6 guests with sole use for the day at an additional charge.

Another hide is open at Giant ’s Castle, but this one does not enjoy the aspect of the ‘Vulture Hide Restaurant’, with photography opportunities not as favourable as that from the ‘Vulture Hide Restaurant’. Guests are normally able to book this hide on arrival.

Numerous Rock Hyrax and diverse bird species abound in the grounds of Giant’s Castle.

Please note that the district roads from Mooi River and Nottingham Road towns leading to Giants Castle Game Reserve are badly potholed in sections and not recommended.
The route from Escourt is presently recommended.
The tar road in Giant’s Castle Game Reserve is in good condition.
